Galaxy Watch Sleep Apnea Tool Wins Korean Approval

Samsung Electronics announced on the 28th that, following U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) approval in July for its advanced sleep apnea analysis feature, it has also obtained domestic authorization from the Ministry of Food and Drug Safety (MFDS). This enables more systematic management of sleep health using the Galaxy Watch.

The sleep apnea analysis feature is a medical solution that measures and analyzes breathing data during sleep through Galaxy wearable devices. Users can check their breathing status while asleep and detect signs of sleep apnea.

The newly approved feature by the MFDS is based on an artificial intelligence (AI) algorithm that analyzes the frequency of breathing disturbances during sleep, helping assess how severe the condition is. Depending on the degree, the level of breathing disturbance is categorized into three stages: “mild,” “occasional,” and “frequent.” If users record at least 5 hours of sleep on two occasions within 10 days, it becomes possible to detect signs of sleep apnea at an early stage. Samsung Electronics stated that this allows sleep health to be managed “more specifically and systematically than before.”

The new sleep apnea analysis feature will be available from November via the Samsung Health Monitor app. It will first be offered on the Galaxy Watch Ultra2, Watch9, and Galaxy Ring, and will then be gradually expanded to existing models such as the Galaxy Watch7 and Watch8.
